I Just Don't Know Where to Start

It’s one of the most common things I hear from business owners who feel overwhelmed.

Then they start telling me everything that’s worrying them. Calls that aren’t getting returned. A key employee who might leave. A software tool nobody uses. Paperwork that keeps piling up. And often, personal pressures are tangled in with the business ones.

The problem isn’t a lack of intelligence, motivation, or effort. It’s having too much on their shoulders at once. When too many things compete for your attention, every decision feels important and every task feels urgent. So some owners freeze. Some retreat. Some give up. Not because they are weak, not because they don’t care, but because they care about all of it.

A simple way to find your starting point

Most situations become more manageable once they’re broken into smaller pieces. Here’s how I start:

  1. Get it all out of your head. Write down everything that’s weighing on you, without sorting it. Seeing it on paper often makes it feel smaller.

  2. Sort what’s urgent from what only feels urgent. Some things truly can’t wait. Many just feel loud.

  3. Look for the piece that unlocks the others. Often one problem, like work that depends on a single person, is behind several others.

  4. Choose one step for this week, and name who owns it. Not a plan for everything. Just one step.

You just need a place to begin

You don’t need to have everything figured out. You just need a place to begin. And sometimes, you need someone to help you take that first step.
